Midlands English Spangled Bobbins

This a flatter style bolster pillow using Midlands English spangled bobbins. It is also a replica bolster pillow - but I have never known the represented date range or country and region. Unlike the French pillow, the bolster is held in place by a wood gear on the left and secured with a metal clip. It is easy to move, but the amount of movement is restricted to the distance between the clefts in the gear.

I always use spangled bobbins on this pillow and they attract a lot of attention. Typically, everyone thinks that the spangles are how I keep track of which bobbins moves where and when, but their is no relationship. People enjoy hearing of the history associated with the spangles - and the personal memories they evoke for me when I use them. Everyone is always amazed by how many bobbins there are - and I don't think they quite believe me when I tell them that there really aren't very many, particularly for a pricking this wide. However, I have no plans to ever choose a pattern that uses many more - just as I have 'spread' with old age, so my need to control my bobbins with lots of space has 'spread' over the years. I'll let someone else stack their many pairs of bobbins like cordwood!

Note the pins on the right side of the bolster. I have to admit that I was 'retro lacing', i.e., going backwards because of a mistake that had to be removed. Fortunately it was the end of the day on Sunday and I was able to go home to work out how I led myself astray.
