This signpost is near the Visitors Center at the first intersection for the walking tours. Panning is popular, particularly with the kids, and this is a great spot for family photographs. Gold panning is still prevalent in North Carolina among the knowledgeable. I am fortunate to have been given (in each of the last three years) gold panned by an expert in Catawba County waters. My friend's avocation has taken him to sites well outside the Carolinas.
