The types and styles of equipment that replaced or supplemented panning in creeks and rivers depended upon the size of the operation; as well as the knowledge, skills, tools, and materials available in the area. Hence, they built sluices to divert water for processing. And rocker boxes permitted manipulating a larger volume of water and ore with less labor. Built-in sieves eased the laborious task of gently swishing and draining water from the simple gold pan.
